Our main objective at Kent Family Dental is always to save a tooth. But, sometimes that option is not attainable. What should you expect when you are scheduled for a tooth extraction? We will numb the area to lessen any discomfort. After the extraction, your dentist will advise you of what post extraction regimen to follow, in most cases a small amount of bleeding is normal. Avoid anything that might prevent normal healing. It is usually best not to smoke, rinse your mouth vigorously, or drink through a straw for 24 hours. These activities could dislodge the clot and delay healing. If you must rinse your mouth within the first couple of days following your extraction, rinse your mouth gently. For pain or swelling, apply a cold cloth or an ice bag. Ask your dentist about pain medication. You can brush and floss the other teeth as usual. Do not clean the teeth next to the tooth socket. If a specialist is required to extract a tooth we will refer you to an oral surgeon. Oral surgeons have more of an advantage as they specialize in these types of procedures if they become overly complicated. Modern procedures and proper follow up care as recommended by your dentist will ensure your recovery is as quick and painless as possible.
