Dental Bonding is a process where a dentist will apply a tooth colored material known as resin, to an existing tooth.  The Dentist will then apply a special light to the material to complete the hardening process.  The bonding process is one of the quickest and most simple forms of cosmetic dentistry to apply.  Usually no anesthesia is required during the application.  Very little tooth preparation is required prior to the bonding process.

What situations are best for applying the bonding process to a patient’s teeth?  Bonding can be used to change the shape of a tooth, make a tooth look longer, fill in gaps between teeth, improve discolored teeth, and repair cracked or chipped teeth.  Bonding can also be used as a substitute for silver fillings as well as to cover the root portion of a tooth in cases where a patient’s gums have receded.

The bonding process is usually a quick and relatively painless procedure rarely requiring any type of anesthesia except in cases where bonding is used to fill a cavity.  The dentist will prep the tooth by roughing up the enamel surface and then applying a cleaning substance to the surface of the tooth to promote adhesion of the bonding agent to the enamel.  The final step is to mix the bonding agent and apply to the tooth.  This usually requires a bit of shaping and fitting if the area is affected by the patients bite.  The bonding agent will be colored matched using a series of tooth colored swatches in order to find an exact color match to the surrounding teeth.  This entire process can be completed in 30 to 60 minutes depending on the extent of the shaping that needs to be done.

Bonding is a process which is usually done in place of a Crown or Veneers.  The bonding process can usually be completed in one office visit and is the lowest cost alternative for minor cosmetic dentistry.  Bonding is also the least traumatic form of cosmetic dentistry to your original teeth.  The downfall to bonding is that is does have a tendency to chip, crack, and discolor over a long period of time and my require rework from time to time.
